La ricetta originale, che nasceva in virtù di proprietà medicinali scaturite dalla miscela di un prodotto alcolico locale come lo scotch con spezie altrettanto reperite sul territorio, coinvolge ancora l’utilizzo di malt e grain whisky provenienti dalle regioni di Highlands e Speyside.

Il suo nome deriva dal Gaelico An Dram Buidheach, ‘la bevanda che soddisfa. Ottenuto da una classica miscela di Scotch Whisky, miele di Erica (la pianta forse più celebre di Scozia) e altre spezie ed erbe la cui natura è rimasta segreta negli anni, Drambuie dichiara la sua nascita nel 1745, in occasione del passaggio sull’isola di Skye del Principe Charles Edward Stuart, in fuga dopo il tentativo fallito di riportare sul trono di Scozia la sua dinastia.
